The Mist Coat: An Essential First Step

70% Leyland Contract Matt + 30% clean water

Mix the paint thoroughly before application. Apply the mist coat evenly using a combination of a roller and brush, making sure you cover the wall consistently without leaving heavy patches.

It is also a good idea to stir the mist coat before starting each new wall, as the mixture can settle while you work.

Allow the mist coat to dry fully before moving on to your first full coat.

Applying the First Full Coat

Once the mist coat has dried, you can apply your first full coat of Leyland Contract Matt.

This coat should be applied straight from the tub, without diluting it.

Start by cutting in around the edges, corners, sockets and other areas that are difficult to reach with a roller. Then use your roller to cover the main areas of the wall.

Work methodically and avoid applying excessively thick layers of paint. A consistent application will help create an even finish across the newly plastered surface.

Do You Need a Second Coat?

A second full coat isn't always necessary, but it can help if you feel the first coat hasn't provided sufficient coverage.

Take a look at the wall once the first full coat has dried. If the colour and coverage look even, you may be happy with the result. If you can still see uneven areas or the coverage isn't quite right, apply a second coat.

Remember to allow the previous coat to dry properly before applying another.

What Paint Should You Avoid on New Plaster?

Choosing the right paint is just as important as preparing the wall correctly.

When painting newly plastered walls, avoid:

Vinyl Matt paints for mist coats
Silk paints on new plaster
Thick, cheap emulsions

These products may not be suitable for use as a mist coat and can contribute to poor adhesion or an uneven finish.
